The long-awaited XBASS 3.0 arrived in November 2025. Our new tests are there, and there is a streamlined way to enter scores into the program. Graphs, tables, and explanations are found throughout the new software. And, there is one new page that is my favorite. Everyone needs a favorite addition – right?
My new favorite page is the SLD Evidence page. Why, might you ask? Not only does it bring everything together related to this PSW methodology, but it also includes the “other data sources” that I often speak about in training. I am a school neuropsychologist, and I love a good standardized test. I love scores, putting scores into tables, and telling families what the scores mean. But a score is only as good as its alignment with other data sources.
Let’s explore:
- When we have standardized academic scores, we can easily use other data sources to validate the actual scores we obtained. We have report cards, teacher input, work samples, and so much more.
- And, if we have a student who scores low on short-term or long-term memory tests, we can easily think of questions to ask the student or the teacher to see if our scores make sense with what is observed in the classroom.
- But what about when we have low fluid reasoning scores? Or low visual processing scores? What might we expect to see in the educational setting?
Some school psychologists, they have this training. They know what to ask and what to look for to validate their standardized test scores. And not every school psych attended the same university program. Not all school psychs get the opportunities to attend national and state conferences. And sometimes, school psychs need a great list of other data sources to confirm standard scores.
That is where the SLD Evidence page comes into play.
- This page shares with us other ways to confirm low standard scores.
- And it differentiates the information based on whether the student is in elementary, middle school, or high school.
- It is right there in the program.
- So, as you are navigating through the program and determining if this student meets the criteria, you have a list of ways to confirm your data.
